GRAYLING FISHING ON THE TWEED
The Tweed's grayling fishing is among the best in the UK, and both the Tweed and its major tributary the Teviot have the type of clear streamy water interspersed with swims and long glides which the shoals of grayling favour. Grayling (pictured above) are classified as coarse fish and can therefore be fished for during the winter months when angling for salmon, trout and sea-trout is prohibited. Summer grayling fishing is also practised, but the prime months are from December to February. Grayling are good fighting fish and offer excellent sport to the fly fisherman, with fish of 2 pounds and over common on the Tweed. A special 'Introduction to Grayling Fishing' course is available for beginners.

TROUT FISHING ON THE TWEED
The Tweed's wild brown trout can grow to considerable sizes and each season fish of 3 or 4 pounds are taken on some of the best trout waters. They are beautifully marked fish, lighter in colour than the typical trout of the Highlands which live in peaty waters. Escaped rainbow trout from fish farms are also found throughout the Tweed, and these can also give exciting sport. Fishing for trout is by either wet or dry fly and traditional Scottish fly patterns are used with medium-sized rods. Fishing is on the Tweed itself, or tributaries such as the Ettrick, Yarrow, Leader water and Teviot.

EQUIPMENT
All necessary equipment can be supplied. Waders, rod, line, reel and flies are provided for both trout and grayling, although anglers can also fish with their own kit. Many guests enjoy the opportunity to try out Tweed Guide's top of the range rods from Sage, Gatti and Gray's in weights from 4-7 and in varying actions.
TWEED GUIDE was founded in 1999 by Bill Drew, a fishing writer and experienced angler based in Selkirk in the heart of the Scottish Borders and close to the middle reaches of the River Tweed. They currently have three experienced guides and offer a complete fly fishing package on some of the most productive stretches of the Tweed and its tributaries. Although the Tweed is recognised as one of the world's top Atlantic salmon rivers it also has excellent, and sometimes overlooked, trout and grayling fishing. Grayling fishing traditionally takes place during the close-season for trout, which means that Tweed Guide can provide a year-round angling service in one of the most beautiful river valleys in Scotland.

Tweed Guide has access to over a hundred miles of unspoilt public and private fly-fishing water in the Melrose Kelso, Galashiels and Selkirk areas. They offer a safe, customised experience backed up by a wealth of local knowledge, and are insured through the NFU and the Scottish Association for Country Sports Accommodation. They cater for individuals. groups of friends, family and corporate parties, regardless of whether they are beginners or experts. A 3 hour or 6 hour session can be booked, or a package arranged that suits specific needs. A family group - for safety, a maximum of 3 children 10-16 years - will learn the life cycle of the trout and grayling, bug hunt to identify the natural prey of the fish and experience fishing at a level that suits each individual. Casting instruction is also available from qualified experts. Experienced anglers can fish remote stretches of the river where they can often fish all day without seeing another angler. Tweed Guide has access to private beats where trout and grayling seldom see an artificial fly.
