BORROBOL ESTATE covers 23,000 acres in the heart of Sutherland in the northern Highlands. This remote and beautiful region boasts some of Scotland's finest wild brown trout fishing in unspoilt surroundings, and is also ideal for birdwatching with more than 100 species recorded, including rarities. The deserted, sandy beaches of the north and east coasts are between 30 and 40 minutes drive away. Fishing is on Loch Ascaig and the River Friadh. There are also a kayak and a canoe on the loch for guests in the cottage. Dogs under control are welcome. Because of the large red deer population on the estate, hill-walkers should consult with the gamekeeper to avoid conflicts with stalking from August onwards. May is probably one of the best months with birds nesting and excellent loch fishing. The estate sells cuts of wild venison and lamb both of which it supplies to top London restaurants. This can be ordered in advance or during the holiday. |

BROWN TROUT FISHING Loch Ascaig is 1.5 miles up the hill road from Borrobol. It is one of the best brown trout lochs in the region, with several hundred trout caught on fly each year. The record brown trout for Ascaig is 5.7lbs (1980). Ascaig is about three quarters of a mile long, and is actively managed to promote the growth of wild trout. There are three 12 foot rowing boats and the loch is also easily wade-fished, with many good fish caught close to the banks. Cars may be parked on the hill road, with the mooring bays about 100 yards below. Season: 15 March - 30 September Tackle: Fly rods and traditional wet and dry flies. Loch Ordie, Black Pennel, Invicta and Bibio are favoured fly patterns. Availability: All fishing is free with the accommodation. Day tickets otherwise cost 12 GBP a boat. |

![]() SALMON AND SEA TROUT FISHING AT BORROBOL Migratory fish may be caught on the River Friadh (pronounced 'Free'), a tributary of the renowned River Helmsdale, but only in spate conditions. It is a pretty moorland river running through heather, with a fishing length of 2.5 miles, and is completely private. Given the water the earliest sea trout arrive in June. There are holding pools in the river, nine of which have been improved from their natural state in the past. Salmon back up in the Helmsdale from June, waiting to run the Friadh in high water. Fishing on the Friadh is fly only, and is free with accommodation. Season ends 30th September. |
